Alabama Council for Technology in Education (ACTE)

Northeast Region Fair

Dear Northeast Region Fair Participant:

We are excited to host the Northeast Region Fair at Northeast Alabama Community College on Friday, April 4, 2014. This letter is intended to provide you with the information necessary to prepare your students for this exciting event. Please be sure to read the documentation on our website (actenortheast.org) and let us know if you have any questions.

The way the competition is managed and operated will be different from that which you have experienced in the past. This method should help to streamline the event while reducing the number of computers that you need to bring. Most importantly, we believe that this method will provide students with more quality time with the judges, in a quieter environment.

Specifically, schools will not be stationed at tables like they are at some regional fairs. Instead, judges will be seated at tables and students will bring their projects to the judges’ table at an appointed time. Students will need to have their project loaded on a portable device (laptop or iPad). Judges will have their own set of earbuds (provided by Farmers Telecommunications Cooperative) to listen to projects with an audio component.

If your school does not have a laptop or iPad that can be used, simply let us know and we will have one available for your use. You then would simply bring your project on a USB drive.

We know that this is different from that which you may be accustomed. However, we believe that this method will help to make your day less stressful and will provide a better learning experience for your students.

So please read the information contained in this letter carefully and do not hesitate to contact us should you have further questions.

We look forward to having you on the NACC campus on April 4!

All the best…
Mike Kennamer

Important Information
Release Forms
Each school must turn in release forms for EVERYONE listed on their roster—students and adults—at check in the morning of April 4. Be sure to send the release forms home to parents in advance so that students are authorized to participate.

Payment
Checks should be made payable to Northeast Alabama Community College. You may either mail your check ($15 per student and $10 per adult) to Mike Kennamer, Northeast Alabama Community College, P.O. Box 159, Rainsville, AL 35986 or bring it with you on the day of competition.

Rules and Scoring
Please make sure you read all the rules and review the scoring rubrics located on our website under the competition tab.

Notebooks
Each project requires an accompanying notebook. Please read “Notebook Requirements” listed under the “Competition” menu on our website: http://actenortheast.org/

Judging
Students will take their project to the judges’ table at an appointed time. Each project will be judged by two judges working as a team. However, judges will submit separate score sheets. The student(s) have approximately 10 minutes to present their project to both judges at the same time, including the judges reviewing the notebook and asking questions. Students are responsible for presenting the project and project notebook. Students should be prepared to share their information with the judges and discuss what they have learned. After the project has been judged, student(s) will return to the auditorium.

The presentation should be loaded on a portable device, such as a notebook computer or iPad, and brought to the judges’ table by the students. Parent(s) and/or teacher(s) may watch the presentation, but are not allowed to interact with the students or judges while the project is being judged.

Waiting
Students who are not being judged are asked to remain in the auditorium. There they may talk with friends and visit any of the fun and informational tables located there. Parents are encouraged to wait there with their students but are welcomed to accompany their students to the lobby for judging.

IT Written Exam
The IT Written Exam will be administered by grade level in the Pendley Administration Building. Announcements will be made when it is time for students to go for testing. Northeast Presidential Hosts will escort testers to testing location, remain with them and escort them back to the auditorium. Parents and/or sponsors may go to the testing area but will not be allowed in the testing room.

Internet
Wireless Internet will be available. Be sure your computer has Wi-Fi capabilities. There will be no access to wired Internet; only Wi-Fi will be available. When possible, back up all projects (including websites) to alternate devices.

Location/Parking/Buses
The fair will take place on the campus of Northeast Alabama Community College. The campus is located on Alabama Highway 35, about 7 miles west of Rainsville.

The fair will be held in the Tom Bevill Lyceum (LY). Parking for cars is available in the large lots in front of and behind the Pendley Administration Building (PA). Do not park in spaces with red or blue curbs. You will not need a parking permit. Disabled parking (blue curbs) is available on both sides of the Tom Bevill Lyceum.

Buses may unload in front of the Tom Bevill Lyceum and park on the grassy area just west of Lowell Barron Drive/Jackson County 47. Campus police will be on hand to help direct bus drivers.

Schedule
Doors to the Tom Bevill Lyceum will open at 8:00 am. One teacher from each school should visit the registration table to pick up their packet. This will contain the schedule for the day, along with lunch tickets. Once the sponsor picks up the packet, participants will go into the auditorium. All participants should be in the auditorium at 9:00 am for the opening session, where you will be provided vital information about the day’s events. Everyone should attend the opening session. The competition will begin at 9:30 am. Once all the judging has taken place we will again gather in the auditorium for the awards presentation. We expect that this will take place beginning at approximately 2:00 or 2:30 pm.

General Rules and Conduct
We are excited to have you and your students on campus. For the safety of your students, we ask that the following general guidelines be followed:

·         In an effort to avoid congestion and control noise in the lobby, everyone will be asked to stay in the auditorium when not meeting with the judges. Students will, of course, need to walk through the lobby to access the restrooms. Anyone found loitering in the lobby will be asked to return to the auditorium.

·         NACC has a beautiful campus with lots of green spaces for your students to enjoy. Once students have been told that their group has been judged and they have finished their IT exam they are welcomed, when accompanied by an adult approved by the school as a chaperone, to visit the quad or other green spaces on campus.
